How To Remove Large Car Dents Yourself
If you have a large dent in your car, do not take it straight to a body shop. You may be able to remove the dent yourself to help you save money. To fix the dent, you need a hot glue gun, wooden dowel, and some wood screws. If you still have a dent after doing this, take your car to a repair shop like Import Specialty Auto where they can remove it for you.
Getting Things Together
You can purchase a hot glue gun and wooden dowels at many retail stores in the craft department, or from a craft store. Both of these items are very inexpensive. You also need a few wood screws, which can be purchased at a hardware store if you do not already have them.
Making the Grips
The wooden dowel is going to be used as a grip to pull out the dent. Cut the dowel every four inches so you will end up with five pieces. If you do not have wood screws, bolts will also work.
Use an electric drill to drill a hole in the middle of the five pieces of dowel you cut, and then screw in the wood screw to be used as side grips. The screw should go all the way through the dowel so part of it is sticking out on each side.
When you are finished, you will have a handle on each side of the dowel that you will use to pull them off the car.
Cleaning the Dent
Before you start removing the dent, you will need to clean it. Use some water and liquid soap in a bucket, and wipe it down with a rag. When you are finished, dry the dent with a blow dryer to heat it up.
Gluing the Grips
Heat up the glue gun, and apply glue to the flat end of the dowel that is opposite to the grips. Make sure you put enough glue so they will stick to your car.
Place the dowels around the dent, and not directly on it.
Pulling Out the Dent
Let the dowels sit for 20 minutes to cool. After this time, pull on the dowels to remove them from your car. You will have to pull them hard to remove them. It works well if you start out pulling the dowels at the bottom and top of the dent at the same time, and then the dowels on each side of the dent at the same time. As the dowels come off, they will pull out the dent.
Do not worry about removing paint on your car, as the hot glue is not strong enough to do this.
When you are finished, you can scrape off the hot glue with a plastic scraper. It should come off easily. You can clean the area with the water and soap when you are finished if you notice any left over glue.
